White's Ferry Study To Evaluate Resumption Of Service

LEESBURG, VA — A new study from Loudoun County and Montgomery County will evaluate options to resume ferry service in the area. The study will review multiple long-term and short-term options to bring back White's Ferry's operations.

Before it paused operations in December 2020, White's Ferry carried hundreds of commuters from Virginia to Maryland and back each day. In April, the ferry's new operators announced that its planned reopening had been delayed to 2022 due to an issue with use rights.

Loudoun County said they expect the study to start in the next month, and it will be completed within 90 days of starting. So, Loudoun residents can expect to hear the results of the study near the end of the summer.

The study will examine roadway access to the ferry, legal and regulatory requirements for the ferry, landing site improvements, landing location options, and operating alternatives, like a public and private partnership.

"The joint study will help evaluate the long-term feasibility and reliability of Potomac River ferry service between Loudoun and Montgomery Counties," Loudoun County said in a news release. Officials also noted that the study will "help identify alternatives for ferry operations with a common goal of re-establishing daily ferry service that benefits the greater community."
