A Lorton Station Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team is heading to the World Finals after placing second in their problem at the state competition. Team members advancing to the World Finals are Arjun Kumar, Baylor Shier, Emily Reinert, Luis Rivera Lopez, Kody Camp, Abigail Woldgebriel, and Brent Niner. Odyssey of the Mind focuses on creative problem-solving.
This exceptionally dedicated Odyssey of the Mind team from Lorton Station Elementary School have been working 2-5 times per week for 5 months. The goal of Odyssey of the Mind is to Think outside the box, and to let kids test theories, push the limits, solve problems all while working together as a team. ALL work must be done by the students with no adult/parent assistance. These amazing kids have written a script, designed costumes, backdrops and art, engineered, performed and constructed all their own props. They perform their original theatrical performance at each competition. As part of each competition, team members also much answer a spontaneous problem. Solving spontaneous problems team members get to “think on their feet.”
The costs per team member to participate in the tournament is over $600 per student. This does not include transportation costs for the team, volunteer coaches, equipment, and parent costs. Lorton Station Elementary School is a Title One School, and does not have funds to help support this dedicated and worthwhile team. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the team offset these costs.
