Northern Virginia Weather: Of the Boy Who Cried 'Snow!'

STERLING, VA — First the snow was going to hold off until next week. But now, according to the area bunker manned by employees of the National Weather Service, there's a 60 percent chance of rain and snow Friday morning.

Little or no snow accumulation of snow is expected.

But afterward, as previously forecast, temperatures take a big-time drop — lows in the 20s, anyone? — despite a decent amount of sunshine.

Snow? Look for it Monday night into Tuesday.

Here's the latest NWS forecast:

Tonight: A slight chance of rain between 1am and 4am, then rain and snow likely. Increasing clouds, with a low around 41. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Friday: Rain and snow showers likely, mainly before 10am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Breezy, with a northwest wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 22. Blustery, with a northwest wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. North wind 5 to 7 mph.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 38.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 22.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 39.

Monday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 29. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Tuesday: Rain and snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 37. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tuesday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 37.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 21.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 40.
