Northern Virginia Weather: Spring-Like Conditions Followed by Snow?

STERLING, VA — Snow could sneak up on us later in the week, which would be a shock to the system given what's in the store the next couple of days, according to the area arm of the National Weather Service.

Both Tuesday and Wednesday, following a sunny Monday with moderate temperatures, are expected to bring highs in the mid-60s — although Tuesday probably will be be a rainy one, at least through noon.

The chance of snow comes Wednesday night into Thursday, but temperatures probably won't deem it accumulation-worthy.

Here's the latest forecast from the NWS:

Tonight: A chance of showers after 10pm. Increasing clouds, with a low around 44. South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: Showers, mainly before 1pm. High near 65. South wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: A chance of showers, mainly before 1am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 52. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Wednesday: A chance of showers after 1pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 64. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday Night: Rain likely before 1am, then a chance of rain and snow between 1am and 4am, then a chance of snow after 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 36. North wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Thursday: A chance of snow before 1pm, then a slight chance of snow showers after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 23.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 40.
