Fire Department: House Fire Sparked By 'Discarded Smoking Materials'

Three adults were displaced Sunday in Yorkshire blaze.

A fire on Sunday afternoon displaced three adults and heavily damaged a single-family home in Yorkshire, according to the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue.

No injuries were reported. The county Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was accidental. It originated on the house’s back deck, and the cause was “improper discarding of smoking materials,” the fire department said.

Fire and rescue units were dispatched at about 3:30 p.m. to the blaze in the split-level home in the 8100 block of Spruce Street in Yorkshire, a neighborhood along Route 28 north of Manassas Park and south of Bull Run.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw that flames had spread from the back deck to the home’s siding and into the roof. They quickly extinguished the blaze and searched for further extension of the fire, but none was found, the fire department said.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the three adults displaced by the fire. According to the Fire Marshal’s office, preliminary damage to the house is estimated at $175,000. A building inspector has posted the home as unsafe.
