The state has seen an increase in COVID-19 deaths reported in recent weeks as VDH processes 2021 death certificates. VDH said the increase is related to a post-holiday surge of COVID-19 cases. There were 59 new deaths reported Wednesday.
A more accurate visualization of deaths involves VDH's death by date on the death certificate data. The three days with the most deaths so far have been Jan. 8 (81 confirmed and 22 probable COVID-19 deaths), Jan. 15 (66 confirmed and 30 probable COVID-19 deaths) and Jan. 17 (70 confirmed and 23 probable COVID-19 deaths).
