Another Day, Another Heat Advisory: Heat Index Forecast at 105 Degrees

Temperatures should begin to get cooler by Friday.

Fairfax County reminds residents that a heat advisory has been issued for Fairfax County by the National Weather Service for today (Thursday).

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. A Code Orange air quality alert has also been issued.

McLean/Fairfax County Weather forecast for this afternoon: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 100. Heat index values as high as 105.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. The Fairfax County Health Department encourages residents to take these steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries and deaths during hot weather:

•Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
•Stay cool indoors in an air-conditioned room.
•Wear appropriate clothing (weight and loose fitting) and sunscreen.
•Schedule outdoor activities carefully and pace yourself; reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
•Do not leave children or pets in cars.
•Check in on relatives and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
