Flood-Damaged Kirby Road Could Reopen In December: VDOT
Swinks Mill Road, the other McLean road needing a long-term fix, could see work completed by the end of September.

MCLEAN, VA — A new update from the Virginia Department of Transportation suggests the flood-damaged Kirby Road in McLean could reopen in mid-December. The damaged portion of Swinks Mill Road is on schedule to be completed by the end of September.
The two roads require long-term fixes after the July 8 flash flooding event. Work is already underway on Swinks Mill Road at Scott's Run. Crews are working to reconstruct the bridge deck and fix the substructure and approaching roadway.
Hundreds of feet of Kirby Road and bridge over Pimmit Run had extensive damage. VDOT previously said the road and bridge repair work would require a contractor. The department awarded a $2.1 million emergency contract to Martins Construction Corporation. Work is expected to begin the week of Sept. 23.

The work will include realigning Little Pimmit Run to its previous position, rebuilding the washed-out portion of Kirby Road, replacing a 24-inch sanitary sewer line, and reconstructing the bridge over Pimmit Run.
The project won't block access to homes. While the road will reopen to through traffic in mid-December, final asphalt and lane striping will continue into May 2020.
