Flood-Damaged Road Reopens In McLean
Work continues on the other road with significant damage from the July 8 flash flooding, according to VDOT.

MCLEAN, VA — One of two McLean roads that saw significant flash flooding damage on July 8 reopened on Friday, Oct. 18, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Swinks Mill Road over Scott's Run is open to one-way traffic, while Kirby Road over Pimmit Run continues to undergo work.
Crews completely reconstructed the Swinks Mill Road bridge deck and repaired the substructure and approaching roadway, VDOT says. The bridge and approaches are limited to one-way traffic as crews continue to finish the guardrail and other work over the next few weeks. Drivers should yield to approaching vehicles on the bridge.
Crews continue work on Kirby Road at Pimmit Run. Hundreds of feet of road and bridge had significant damage, with repair work including the realignment of Little Pimmit Run and rebuilding of a washed-out portion of Kirby Road. The road is expected to be open to traffic in mid-December, and final asphalt and detail work will continue through spring 2020.

Wonder what it takes to rebuild a washed out road? Check out these pics from Kirby Rd of the concrete forms (the wooden structure) with rebar inside. Concrete gets poured inside & cured until it reaches optimal strength. This is one element of many in the reconstruction of Kirby! pic.twitter.com/XN08ZrQwyj

VDOT previously said the road and bridge repair work would require a contractor. Martins Construction Corporation received a $2.1 million emergency contract to conduct the repair work.
VDOT said the work would not block access to homes. Work is weather permitting.
