Internet Outage Impacts Access To Virtual Learning In NoVA

School districts in Northern Virginia said the Verizon Fios outage on the East Coast is impacting students and staff.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A Verizon Fios internet outage on the East Coast is impacting access to virtual learning for some students and school staff Tuesday.

Customers have been reporting internet troubles in areas of the East Coast, including the DC region. Verizon Support said in a tweet response that the outage is related to a fiber cut in Brooklyn, New York and that technicians are addressing it.

Northern Virginia school districts sent out messages noting the outage's impact on access to online classes.

"FCPS is aware that many people in our region are experiencing internet outages, Fairfax County Public Schools said in an alert. "There are reports that many cities on the East Coast are also reporting problems. FCPS knows some students are not able to login to online classes. We will provide updates as we know more."

"PWCS is aware of internet connection problems with Verizon FIOS impacting students and staff," Prince William County Public Schools noted on its website.

Alexandria City Public Schools said in a tweet the outage is impacting some staff and that some teachers may not be able to connect to classes in the afternoon.

Loudoun County Public Schools said the issues began around noon with widespread effects on the East Coast.

"LCPS sites and services are online, but access may be limited based on your provider’s network," the school district tweeted. "LCPS will give updates as they become available."
