Langley Girls Varsity Tennis Team Wins State Championship

That headline on the Langley High School Girls Varsity Tennis Team website said it all.

The girls team defeated Mills Godwin, a team competing in its VHSL-record 11th straight Group AAA title match Saturday in Huntington Park in Newport News.

The final score, 5-3 to Langley according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The Times-Dispatch reported that "Langley (20-0) had never played a match closer than 7-2 before facing Godwin on Saturday. The Saxons never needed to proceed to doubles to win a match, either. The Eagles were pursuing their 10th state championship. Their nine titles are the most in VHSL history."

The Girls Varsity said on its website: 20 years since our last state championship! Wow! Great tennis on a beautiful day!

"The third time is the charm. After losing to them the past two years we finally conquered the strong Mills Godwin Eagles.  We finished out the season 20-0!

"What a great season! Thanks to all of our supporters this season! Langley Tennis 2012 - State Champions."

The Langley Boys Varsity Tennis team lost to the Deep Run Wildcats (20-0) in their championship game.

That win gave Deep Run its third consecutive Group AAA state title, beating Langley 5-4 Saturday at Huntington Park. They also extended their winning streak to 56 matches, The Times-Dispatch reported.
