Letter to the Editor: Community Pulls Together

Jane Pyrak of Annandale shares with Patch a project making a difference.

To the Editor:

As I began reading the Patch article titled posted Feb. 28, I decided to share with your readers one way communities can pull together to help those in need during these tight fiscal times.

On Friday morning, I was able to share in the presentation of 1,000 books that were collected for the Pimmit Hills Adult High School Center in Falls Church. The Fairfax County Republican Committee organized the book drive after the new executive director of the committee, Daniel Tillson, visited the school and saw how bare the shelves in the school’s library were. This became the first project as a part of the new Fairfax Republicans “Sponsoring the American Dream” project. Education is an integral part in achieving the American dream, and recycling books is always a great idea.

It became a real community project as books were collected all month and at our monthly meeting. Community leaders got involved in getting the word out, and two of them came for the presentation of books today — Del. Barbara Comstock and school board member Elizabeth Shultz. It was wonderful for me as a FCRC member to get to meet some of the terrific young people at the Pimmit Hills Center. Hearing their goals and dreams to continue on with their education was very inspiring.

Everyone agreed this is a project we should continue and grow. Launching a partnership where members of the community can work together to provide some relief in these difficult times is a WIN-WIN for everyone involved!
