McLean Community Center Calendar of Events for October 2019

McLean, Va.— The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in October. Residents of the Center’s tax district, Small District 1A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

McLean 5k

Saturday, Oct. 5; race begins at 8 a.m.

McLean Square Shopping Center, 6631 Old Dominion Dr., McLean, Va. 22101

Registration $35 per person

The McLean 5k Run is back! Hosted by MCC with the support of event sponsors Century 21 New Millennium and The Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce, the race features a USATF certified course through the heart of McLean and is designed to appeal to runners of all abilities. The proceeds from McLean 5k Run will benefit the McLean Community Foundation (MCF) 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

McLean Traveler Day Trip

From the Women of Jamestown to the American Revolution, Jamestown, Virginia

Wednesday, Oct. 9, 7 a.m.-8:30 p.m.

$180/$175 MCC district residents

In the year 1607, our country began the first permanent English settlement in North America with the settlement of Jamestown. Spring 2019 marked the completion of a $10.6 million restoration of the Jamestown Settlement Gallery. The day starts with an overall guided tour of exhibits that highlight the beginning of the Jamestown Colony and how it evolved in the 17th Century.

The Old Firehouse Teacher Work Day Trip

Behind the Scenes at Baltimore Aquarium

Monday, Oct. 14, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

$80/$70 MCC district residents

Experience the aquarium like you have never before. Join The Old Firehouse staff as they go behind the scenes to feed and encounter some of underwater friends. Following the aquarium, become musical legends and dine at Hard Rock Café. Total aquarium package and lunch are included in the fee.

Haunted Trip

Friday, Oct. 18, 4:30-11 p.m.

$60/$50 MCC district residents

The Old Firehouse staff invites the brave-hearted to join them on a haunted journey searching for ghosts, zombies and whatever creepy creatures might appear in the night. Admission to all attractions are included in the fee.

The Pop-Ups “The Great Pretenders Club”

Saturday, Oct. 19, 1 p.m.

$15/$10 MCC district residents

From three-time Grammy nominees, The Pop Ups, “The Great Pretenders Club” takes family audiences of all ages on a scavenger hunt for the best imaginative play games your mind can dream up! This highly interactive show unfolds, propelled by award-winning music and dance beats that will catapult both young and old out of their seats!

McLean Pet Fest

Sunday, Oct. 20, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

McLean Central Park, 1468 Dolley Madison Blvd.

The McLean Community Center has created the “purrfect” event for local pet owners and their beloved animals. Learn valuable information and get tips on a variety of pet products and services that can enhance the lives of your pet and improve your experience as a pet owner. A variety of pet care related exhibitors will be participating.

“Brush Up Your Shakespeare”

Tuesday, Oct. 22, 7 p.m.

$7/$5 MCC district residents

Crack that Shakespeare code with our expert hackers! Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic team return to prepare you for ASC on Tour's productions of “Imogen (Cymbeline),” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “The Grapes of Wrath,” and they will lead you in a spirited discussion about the Bard.

Wednesday, Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m.

Open to the public

Tax district residents (Small District One A-Dranesville) who wish to speak during the “Citizen Comment” portion of the meeting are asked to call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711, to be placed on the agenda.

American Shakespeare Center (ASC) on Tour

$40 per person, per performance/$35 senior/$30 MCC district residents. Packages of all three plays and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” are available for $110/$80 MCC district residents.

Shakespeare’s’ “Imogen” (“Cymbeline”) (13+)

Saturday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m.; Doors open and live music starts at 1:30 p.m.

Princess Imogen is catapulted onto an epic journey when her father, King Cymbeline, banishes her soulmate. Featuring a band of tough-but-loveable woodsmen, an evil queen, noble battles and unexpected plot twists, this late Shakespearean play enchants audiences with a story about a powerful princess who will do anything for love.

Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (All Ages)

Saturday, Oct. 26, 7:30 p.m.; Doors open and live music starts at 7 p.m.

In “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Shakespeare casts a theatrical spell powerful enough to make audiences of all ages believe in anything. This mischievous comedy of lovers, heroes, fairies and rude mechanicals is his tribute to humankind's power of imagination and reveals that the “course of true love” can alter with just one touch of magic.”

Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath”

Sunday, Oct. 27, 2 p.m.; Doors open and live music starts at 1:30 p.m.

An Oklahoma drought during the Great Depression forces the Joad family to flee their home for the promise of a new life in California. Will hope prevail through the hardships and heartbreak? Steinbeck’s classic novel comes to life in this Tony Award-winning stage adaptation.
