MCLEAN, VA — The second of two McLean roads with significant damage after flash flooding on July 8 has reopened, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Kirby Road over Pimmit Run and Little Pimmit Run opened at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11. VDOT says landscaping and other detail work will continue during regular work zone hours over the next few weeks.

The flash flooding caused damage to hundreds of feet of road and bridge and washed out a portion of the road. On July 8, crews had to remove debris and temporarily fix the bridge so surrounding residents wouldn't be blocked from accessing their homes.

VDOT awarded a $2.1 million emergency contract to Martins Construction Corporation to rebuild the road and reconstruct the bridge. In addition, Little Pimmit Run also had to be realigned. The reconstruction of the road portion alone was finished on Nov. 14.

The other road with severe damage from flash flooding, Swinks Mill Road over Scott's Run, reopened on Oct. 18. Crews repaired the Swinks Mill Road bridge deck and repaired the substructure and approaching roadway. Unlike Kirby Road, this work did not require a contractor.
