Proposed Fairfax County Budget To Be Discussed At McLean Meeting

Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust will be on hand for a meeting on Fairfax County's proposed budget.

MCLEAN, VA — After County Executive Bryan Hill presented his proposed budget for fiscal year 2021 on Tuesday, a public meeting is coming up with Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust. The McLean Citizens Association and Foust will host the Dranesville District Budget Public Meeting Thursday, Feb. 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Ave, McLean.

The proposed county budget would raise the real estate tax by 3 cents to make the rate $1.18 per $100 of assessed value. Residents in the McLean Community Center special tax district pay an additional tax on top of the Fairfax County — the current rate is $0.023 per $100 of assessed value. The proposal would allocate two cents of the tax hike would go the general fund and one cent to affordable housing.

Even without a tax increase, residents in the Dranesville District and across Fairfax County would see the average tax bill rise due to increasing assessment values in 2020. The latest property assessments show an average 2.08 percent increase in the Dranesville District from 2019. That average increase was the lowest among supervisor districts in Fairfax County. The highest average increases are in the Lee District (3.92 percent), Mason District (3.57 percent) and Mount Vernon District (3.08 percent). Nearly 79 percent of residential property countywide saw assessments go up.

The budget proposal also calls for the implementation of a 4 percent admissions tax on the sale of movie, theater and concert tickets, which would take effect in October 2020. Revenue from the Admission Tax would be added to the county's contributing fund and used to support arts, cultural activities, and tourism.
