TYSONS, VA — Is it Tysons or Tysons Corner? Either name could be used depending on who you talk to. But the Tysons Corner Metro could have the "Corner" dropped from the name if approved by the transit authority's board.

Over the summer, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors officially requested the Tysons Corner Metro be changed to Tysons Metro. A county staff report cited rebranding efforts for the census-designated place now known as Tysons. The U.S. Postal Service granted a request from the Board of Supervisors in March 2011 to change the name to Tysons, VA in the 22102 and 22182 zip codes. The U.S. Postal Service made the name change for the census-designated place of Tysons in 2015.

The Metro station isn't the only place bearing the Tysons Corner name. A few examples are Tysons Corner Center, the Tysons Corner DMV customer service center, and some of the hotels and residential communities.

The Metro station name change would result in changes to the Metro system maps, digital signs, the wmata.com website, SmarTrip app, in-system directional signage, and other materials. Metro's name change policy requires the jurisdiction requesting a change to commit to funding the cost. A staff reported indicated the name change would cost $670,000.

The new name must also identify the station location by geographic features, be distinctive and evoke imagery, and be no longer than 19 characters (or 13 characters for transfer station names).

In addition to the Tysons Corner station name change in Fairfax County, a name change is requested for the Prince George's Plaza Station. Prince George's County officials requested the name be changed to Hyattsville Crossing.

The name changes must be approved by the Metro Board of Directors. The board is seeking public feedback on the process and has an online survey open through 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2.
