Sinkhole Closes Direction Of GW Parkway Into Tuesday In McLean
The National Park Service says the sinkhole is near Dead Run, where another was found in March.

MCLEAN, VA—A section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway will remain closed Tuesday to stabilize a sinkhole and develop a long-term repair plan, according to the National Park Service. Rainy weather delayed the stabilization repairs.
The sinkhole was found near Dead Run in the McLean area. During repairs, the northbound parkway from Route 123 to the Capital Beltway will be closed. The southbound direction is open. One northbound lane could open for the Tuesday evening rush hour depending on weather.
Crews are working to stabilize the sinkhole, which relates to a 40-foot deep brick inlet, NPS says. Over the weekend, engineers found leaks in a vertical drainage structure that takes water from the road to a pipe beneath the road.

Stabilizing the soil began with crews adding three truckloads of flowable fill to the sinkhole. On Monday, NPS says grout will be injected into the ground, acting as expanding foam to stabilize the soil. The next steps also include inspecting the pipes below the road with a camera.
The sinkhole is located in the same area as another found in March. The repairs shut down the northbound parkway Friday, March 22 into part of the weekend.
