Whiz Kids: McLean High School Honors Teams, Athletes; Theater Dept. Honored at Kennedy Center

During the last week of school, McLean High School honored the following sports teams and athletes. The PTSA also recognized students in the theater department.

Boys Tennis: The boys tennis team had a banner year this season, finishing undefeated in District play going 16-0 and capturing the Liberty District Championship.

In the Liberty District tournament, Nik Padmanabhan won the singles title and Nik and Kayvon Mobaraek won the doubles title. The team followed it up with a Regional final four appearance. In the Regional Singles and Doubles tournament, Nik was a regional finalist and will compete in the State Singles tournament starting on June 7. To cap off their outstanding play on the court, Coach Aavo Tomkov was named Liberty District Coach of the year.

Girls Tennis: The girls' tennis team had an outstanding season, finishing with a 12-4 record and qualified for the regional team tournament. In the liberty district singles and doubles tournament, Anna Pelak had an outstanding tournament finishing in 3rd place.  In the doubles tournament, Anna and Julia finished in third place. In Regional team play, the girls won two big matches against Chantilly and Woodson to reach the Regional Final Four.

Boys Soccer: The Boys Soccer team had an outstanding year finishing in the top 4 in the regular season with many quality wins. Going into the District tournament as the 4 seed, they put together 3 straight wins against Stone Bridge, Thomas Jefferson and Langley to capture the Liberty District Championship and qualify for the Northern Region tournament!

Girls Soccer: The girls soccer team had a great campaign getting off to a fast start battling a tough district and non district schedule. The team entered the District Tournament as the three seed and made a tremendous run beating Fairfax, Langley and Stone Bridge to capture the Liberty District Championship, going back to back in 2011 and 2012. With the win the team qualified for the Regional tournament. The following Individuals received awards:

Caroline Gray-1st Team All Met, 1st Team All District, 1st Team All Region.
Evelyn Robinson-1st Team All District, 2nd Team All Region
Rose Sommovigo-1st team All District, Honorable Mention All Region
Bri Nielsen-2nd Team All District

Baseball: The Baseball team had an outstanding season with many team and individual accolades. They finished with a 15-9 record against a very tough regional schedule.  The team had a great regular season finishing with the two seed in the liberty district tournament and making to the Liberty District Championship game. The team followed up with a spot in the Regional tournament. The following players received these accolades:

Josh Sborz –All Met Player of the year. 1st Team All Met Pitcher. Player of the Year, All District and All Region, 1st Team All District & 1st Team All Region-Pitcher
Brock Hunter – 1st team All District, Honorable Mention All Region

Mark Hannibal – Honorable Mention All District
Tom Cresce – Honorable Mention All District
Jack Fant – Honorable Mention All District

Softball: The Softball team had an outstanding season finishing with a 17-6 record with many quality wins on the season and advancing to the District semi-finals and the Northern Region tournament. Congratulations to the following individuals who received All District:

Boys Lacrosse: The Boys lacrosse team had several quality wins this year with district wins over Fairfax and Marshall. Several lacrosse players received individual honors:

Outdoor  track: Outdoor track had a very successful season competing in several prestigious meets in addition to their District Schedule: Some of the top performances in District were the following:
Kelly Oler – 100m dash – 4th;  High jump – 3rd 
Alexa Tabackman – 1600m run – 2nd
Megan McCormack – 1600m run – 4th
Madalyn Harper – 1600m run – 5th
Elizabeth Lewis – High Jump – 5th
Alex Kohout – Pole Vault – 6th
Michael Vignali – 400m Dash – 4th; 4x400 – 3rd
Mac Howard – 800m Run – 3rd; 4x400 – 3rd
Alex Hedrick – 300m hurdles – 3rd; Pole Vault – 2nd; Long Jump – 5th; 4x400 – 3rd
Ben Blumenthal – 300m hurdles – 6th; 4x400 – 3rd
Scotty Lafoon – Shot Put – 1st; Discus – 1st
Cole Matheny – Discus – 6th

In addition to the many accomplishments at the District Level. Scott Lafoon and Alex Hendrick qualified for State competition. As well Scott Lafoon received Honorable Mention All Met.

Crew:  2012 Crew had a very tough but successful 2012 campaign with the Novice Men winning the Bronze medal at the Ted Phoenix, the Freshmen Women making the State Final in their event and a great showing by all of the boats in most of the 12 to 14 regattas the teams competed in.
Notably the Women’s Lightweight Eight and Men’s Lightweight Eight were the cream of the crop but our Women’s and Men’s Senior Fours finished in the top 10 in the country, not to mention McLean had six boats invited to the National

Championships and one boat invited to the Youth National Championships.  McLean won the Mid Atlantic Erg Sprints Team Trophy for the 11th time in 12 years and placed two rowers on the First Team ALL-MET team and three rowers on the Honorable Mention Team, We had two ALL MET Best Boats (Light 4 for Boys and First 4 and Light 8 for Girls) and probably most notably are only losing 10 seniors out of varsity boats, making way for a strong showing in 2013.

Theater Department Honored. The McLean Theater Department, headed by Amy Poe, brought home six Cappie Awards recently. Cappies are the Tony Awards for high school theater.
