Whiz Kids: National Merit Scholar Winner, Band Winner, New College Grads

These McLean kids — and young adults — caught our attention for their recent accomplishments. A round of applause for the group, please!

National Merit Scholarship Winner.  Jamison Fox-Canning of Langley High School is among six Fairfax County Public Schools students named winners of Merit Scholarship awards by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Fox-Canning won for game design, and received a National Merit Rochester Institute of Technology Scholarship. The students are part of a group of more than 2,500 National Merit finalists chosen to receive scholarships financed by higher education institutions.

McLean Sophomore First Place in Music Competition. McLean High School sophomore Allie Arnold placed first in the freshman/sophomore division of the Northern Virginia Music Teacher Association's Woodwind Competition.  Judges for the semi-annual competition included musicians from the US Army and Marine Bands. 

“This is huge achievement and we are extremely proud of Allie,” said McLean’s Director of Bands, Chris Weiss. Ms. Arnold is a clarinetist in McLean’s Symphonic and Marching Bands. McLean’s nationally-acclaimed symphonic, concert, marching and jazz bands perform across America. 

Newly Minted McLean college Graduates:

From Colgate University.  India Stuart Rosse, B.A. in International Relations and French. Elizabeth Bittles Walcott, B.A. in English. India and Elizabeth were among  661 students in the Colgate the Class of 2012.

From Clemson University.  Richard William Horner Jr. of Mc Lean, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics

Katherine Elizabeth Law of Mc Lean, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering

Gerald Stephen Perry III of Mc Lean, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies

Vanessa Fidelina Reyes of Mc Lean, who graduated with a Master of Architecture in Architecture

David Patton Romness of Mc Lean, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

They were among  2,242 graduates in the class of 2012.

Making the Honor Roll. Timothy Reinhart, of McLean, made the Honor Roll at Brevard College.
