Mount Vernon Man Dead After Townhouse Fire

The three other residents of the home were not injured.

A local man is dead after a fire at his townhouse home in the Villages of Mount Vernon.

Clifford Johns, 54, of Venoy Court, was taken to INOVA Mount Vernon hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Fire officials are still investigating the cause and manner of his death.

When firefighters arrived at John's two-story townhouse around 9:05 p.m., they found smoke and fire coming from the rear of the home. Firefighters began to attack the fire in the second floor bedroom, which was fully ablaze. They were able to extinguish the blaze completely, and found Johns there.

There was a smoke alarm in the home, but it was not mounted and did not go off during the fire. The Red Cross is providing assistance for the three remaining occupants, who were not injured.

The Fire & Rescue Department estimates that there was about $50,000 in damages.
