Target to Hire Fewer Seasonal Workers

Retail chain plans to hire 18,000 fewer seasonal workers to give permanent employees first crack at extra hours.

Target says it will hire about 70,000 seasonal workers for the holiday shopping season, a 20 percent drop from a year ago.

The Minneapolis-based retail chain says its plans to hire 18,000 fewer workers will allow its permanent employees to get first crack at working extra hours during the holiday season, reports AP.The company also said its wants to respond more quickly to the ebb and flow of customer traffic as many shoppers wait to shop until they believe they can get the best deals.

Holiday hiring typically starts gaining momentum in October.

Retail analysts and stores are bracing for a slow holiday shopping period after seeing a slower than expected back-to-school season. Holiday shopping often accounts for as much as 40 percent of a store's annual revenue.
