Newport News 2017 City Election Results: Democrats Lead The Way

Democrat Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam defeated Republican Ed Gillespie on Tuesday in the race for Virginia governor. Here's how everyone else did.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Election Day is over and Virginians elected Democrat Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam on Tuesday to serve as the Commonwealth's next governor. But that wasn't the only race that Norfolk voters had to decide.

In the race for Virginia's lieutenant governor, Democrat Justin Fairfax defeated Republican Jill Vogel. Mark Herring, Virginia's incumbent Democratic attorney general, also defeated Republican challenger John Adams.

Four Newport News Democrats — Marcia Price, Howard Gwynn, Gabe Morgan and Marty Eubank — ran unopposed Tuesday for Virginia's 95th district delegate, the city's commonwealth's attorney, sheriff and treasurer. But that wasn't the case for the city's commissioner of revenue and two other delegate races.

Democrat Michael Mullin was leading Republican Heather Cordasco in the race for Virginia's 93rd district delegate.

In the battle for Virginia's 94th district delegate, Democrat Shelly Simonds had a narrow lead over David Yancey, a Republican, with Libertarian Michael Bartley far behind.
