At this time, the city is not opening a shelter in advance of the storm, however we are prepared to do so if conditions worsen. The Newport News sheltering plan has been updated to include COVID-19 modifications that ensure the safety of residents and staff.

Solid waste collections (trash, recycling and bulk waste) will not take place on Tuesday. Collections will resume on Wednesday, August 5, and will be delayed one day. Residents should not have cans or bulk waste at the street after today’s pickup due to the potential for high winds.

Newport News residents of low-lying areas are invited to park their vehicles at the City Center parking garages at Fountain Way (11805 Fountain Way) and Merchants Walk (11860 Merchants Walk). Due to size and space restrictions, boats, RVs and oversized vehicles are prohibited.

Roadways, homes and businesses in low-lying areas may become flooded. There’s also the potential for tornadoes, so it is imperative residents monitor the weather forecast and prepare. We will continue to post information on the city website, www.nnva.gov, and our social media channels.

While preparing for severe weather, residents are reminded that COVID-19 is still a significant risk. Everyone should continue to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Don’t gather in large groups and, if you are planning on sheltering with family or friends, make sure they haven’t been exposed to COVID-19.
