May is often a month associated with motherhood, due to the fact that is the month that Mother's Day takes place. While Mother's Day is included on most calendars you will buy at a store, rarely is the holiday before that day mentioned. Did you know that the holiday before Mother's Day happens to be Birth Mother's Day? Most people outside of the adoption world have never heard of Birth Mother's Day, however Adoptions From The Heart (AFTH) is part of the movement to make the holiday more mainstream.

Placing a child for adoption is one of the hardest decisions an expectant parent will ever make in life. It is important to recognize these women for their selfless act in doing what was best for their child out of love. A few weeks ago the AFTH Adoption Social Worker Nicole Fowler, BS gathered a group of birth mothers who placed their children for adoption through their Chesapeake, VA office.

This year the celebration was held at Topgolf. The group consisted of birth mothers who placed their child for adoption as recently as one month before to women who placed over eleven years ago. Nicole Fowler, an AFTH social worker who has worked with many of theses women, has fond memories from that day."Some of the attendees have known each other from the quarterly support groups for over two years. They share and support each other through accomplishments, difficult times, and varying openness in their respective adoptions. We look forward to continuing the support group and welcome women and men who have made an adoption plan or are considering their options," said Fowler.

History of Birth Mother's Day

The founder of Birth Mother's Day is Mary Jean Wolch-March, a fellow birth mother herself. Mary wanted to create a day where birth mothers like herself would be acknowledge and support one another. Adoptive parents and adoptees alike would have this day to honor the women who made this hard decision out of love. On Saturday May 12, 1990 (the day before Mother's Day) Mary invited a group of birth mothers to her place in Seattle to share laughs, loves and support. The rest as they say is history!
