Deterring Mosquitoes without Harming Pollinators

a fan can keep mosquitoes at bay

Did you know that setting up a fan on your deck or patio is an easy way to enjoy the outdoors while keeping mosquitoes at bay? Mosquitoes are weak fliers so the air flow will drive them off while providing some relief during hot summer days and evenings. Bug zappers on the other hand attract few mosquitoes but are deadly to many other insects that are necessary for a diverse and healthy ecosystem. At present there is little research that citronella, garlic oil, or other herbal repellents provide much protection. Repellents with 25-30 percent DEET, 20 percent Picaridin, oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, and IR-3535 are your best choices for warding off mosquitoes and ticks while outdoors. Consumer Reports’ annual review of mosquito and tick repellents is a good source for the most effective products on the market. Indiscriminate spraying of insecticides is extremely harmful to beneficial pollinators and other insects while offering limited control of mosquitoes and ticks.
