National Weather Service Issues Flash Flood Watch for Oakton

The warning will take effect late Friday evening and will last until Saturday evening throughout most of D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch throughout Northern Virginia beginning late Friday evening and extending through Saturday evening.

“A warm front will lift through Southern and Central Virginia Saturday and Saturday night with heavy rains developing late tonight into Saturday morning across the Shenandoah Valley and spreading northeast across the rest of the area Saturday morning,” reads the alert. “Thunderstorms are expected Saturday into Saturday evening with one to three inches of rain likely by the time a cold front clears the area late Saturday night.

“Given the very wet antecedent conditions and heavy rains expected on Saturday, potential exists for flash flooding to occur on small streams, creeks and urban areas. Significant rises are also likely on main stem rivers such as the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.”

The National Weather Service reminds Northern Virginia residents that a flash flood watch means “conditions may develop” that lead to flash floods.

“You should monitor later forecasts and prepared to take action should a flash flood warning be issued,” the National Weather Service said to close its alert.
