Virginia Girls Lacrosse: Oakton Moves On to Northern Region Semifinals

Win over Yorktown on Thursday gives Cougars the chance to qualify for the state tournament.

The Oakton High School girls lacrosse team beat Yorktown 14-9 on Thursday night, setting up the defending state champs for the Northern Region semifinals next week.

Oakton (10-5) was sparked by the offense of Danielle Palmucci, who netted four goals to lead all scorers. Meagan McRoberts also came up big for the Cougars, with three goals and two assists. Karlie Cronin netted two goals, and five other players had one a piece.

Madison beat Oakton for the state title in 2011 .

Beyond the on-field competiton, there's a family rivalry too: Oakton Head Coach Jean Counts and Madison Coach Amanda Counts are sisters-in-law.

The game starts at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Madison High.
