Alexandria Grad Noah Lyles Headed To Olympics With 200m Win

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Noah Lyles, a graduate of Alexandria's T.C. Williams High School, is headed to the Olympics in Tokyo after a dominant win in the men's 200m final at trials.

Lyles, 23, clocked in at a world-leading time of 19.74 seconds in the 200m final. The 200m is considered his best event, and he will be one of the contenders for a gold medal in Tokyo. According to Team USA, he has only lost one 200m final as a pro.

"I don’t think anyone can prepare you for the lion you have to slay at the Olympic Trials," Lyles said via a Team USA news story. "It’s not world championships. It’s not U.S. championships. This is the hardest team to make and everyone knows it."

Lyles has been vying for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team after missing it in 2016 by six-hundredths of a second. However, he went on to win two world championship gold medals in 2016 for the 200m and 4x100m. He most recently won two world championship world medals for the 200m and 4x100m relay in 2019.

Lyles graduated from T.C. Williams High School in 2016 before turning pro. He and his brother, Josephus Lyles now live in Florida.

While he secured his place on Team USA with the 200m win, Lyles did not qualify for the men's 100m in the Olympics after finishing seventh in trials. His brother Josephus competed in trials but did not qualify for the Olympics.

The Olympics kick off on July 23, with track and field events starting on July 30.
