Alexandria Primary 2021: Voter Registration Deadline Approaches

The primary election is coming up for Alexandria mayor, City Council, governor, and more.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As the June 8 Democratic primary approaches in Alexandria, the voter registration deadline is Monday, May 17.

The primary will feature races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, House of Delegates, Alexandria mayor and Alexandria City Council. Voters in the 45th House District will vote in the primary, but there will be no primary for the 46th House District. The Republican Party of Virginia determined nominees for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general through a convention.

U.S. citizens in Virginia who will be 18 or older by the Nov. 2 general election are eligible to register to vote. Applications may be submitted online vote.elections.virginia.gov by the end of May 17, in person at the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration and Elections (132 N. Royal Street, Suite 100) by 5 p.m. on May 17, or downloaded at alexandriava.gov/Elections and mailed to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314. Mailed applications must be postmarked by May 17.

Residents registered to vote should also update their address if needed at vote.elections.virginia.gov, by email at voters@alexandriava.gov, or by calling 703-746-4050. Voters who do not update their registration records before the deadline may be ineligible to vote in the primary.

Early voting for the June 8 primary began on April 23 and will continue through 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. In-person early voting happens at the Office of Voter Registration & Elections, 132 North Royal Street, Suite 100. An acceptable form of ID is required for in-person voting.

Here are the early voting hours:

Monday - Friday: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (Closed Monday, May 31 for Memorial Day)
Saturday, May 22, 29, June 5: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
May 24 and 25, June 2 and 3: 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

The deadline to submit a mail-in absentee ballot application is 5 p.m. on May 28. Completed absentee ballots must be received by the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on June 8, or postmarked by June 8 and received in the office by noon on June 11.

Another option to return absentee ballots is ballot drop boxes. A secure outdoor drop box under video surveillance, is located in front of the Office of Voter Registration and Elections 132 North Royal Street, Suite 100. Ballot drop boxes will also be available at all polling places on June 8 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ballots returned by drop box must be received by 7 p.m. on June 8.

Your sample ballot will be based on whether you live in the 45th House District or 46th House District. Both districts will feature races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, House of Delegates, Alexandria mayor and Alexandria City Council. The 45th House District has a primary election.

Voters who want to cast their ballot in person on June 8 can go to their assigned polling place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. An acceptable form of ID is required for in-person voting. To find your polling place, visit www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal.
