Alexandria Primary Election 2021: Early Voting Deadline Coming Up

No-excuse early voting is available by mail or in person at the Office of Voter Registration & Elections.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — With the June 8 Democratic primary coming up in Alexandria, residents should be aware of the early voting deadline.

The primary will include races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, House of Delegates, Alexandria mayor and Alexandria City Council. Voters in the 45th House District will vote in the primary, but there will be no primary for the 46th House District. There is no Republican primary, as the party chose nominees for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general through a convention.

In Virginia, voters no longer need an excuse to vote early by mail or in person. The deadline to vote early is 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. Early in-person voting is available at the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration & Elections, 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100. An acceptable form of ID is required for in-person voting.

Hours for early voting are:

  • Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p. m.
  • Closed Monday, May 31
  • Saturday, May 29, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 2, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 3, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 5, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Those who wish to vote by mail must submit an absentee ballot application. That application must be received by the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 28. Applications can be submitted online at vote.elections.virginia.gov, downloaded and returned by mail (132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA. 22314), fax (703-838-6449) or scanned email attachment (VoteAbsentee@alexandriava.gov), or completed in person at the Office of Voter Registration & Elections.

Completed absentee ballots must be received by the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on June 8, or postmarked by June 8 and received in the office by noon on June 11.

Ballot drop boxes are also available to return a completed absentee ballot. Drop boxes will be available at all polling places on June 8 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. A secure drop box under video surveillance is also available in front of the Office of Voter Registration & Elections 24 hours a day through 7 p.m. on June 8.

Registered voters who will be 18 or older by the Nov. 2, 2021 election may vote in the primary election. The deadline to register to vote or update an address was May 17.

For those voting in person on Election Day (June 8), polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. An acceptable form of ID is required for in-person voting. Find your polling place at vote.elections.virginia.gov or see the city's precinct map.

Polling place changes for the June 8 primary include changing the voting location for the Ladrey Senior Building Precinct to Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.), changing the voting location for the Hermitage Precinct to John Adams Elementary School (5651 Rayburn Ave.), and changing the voting location for the Douglas MacArthur School Precinct to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial (101 Callahan Drive).

All voters will vote in the primaries for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, Alexandria mayor, and Alexandria City Council. Voters should note Elizabeth R. Guzman withdrew candidacy for lieutenant governor. The 45th House District also has a primary election.
