Alexandria Resident Convicted of Murder, Awaiting Sentencing

Rashad Lonzell Adkins, 22, of Alexandria, was convicted by a jury of two felonies related to a July 2, 2015 murder on N. Fayette Street.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- An Alexandria man has been convicted of murder and a jury is deliberating his sentence which they will recommend to the Court, the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, City of Alexandria, announced Thursday.

Adkins was convicted of murder in the second degree and use of a firearm in the commission of murder.

Rashad Lonzell Adkins, 22, of Alexandria, was convicted by a jury of two felonies related to a murder that occurred in the City on July 2, 2015. That night Adkins and the victim, Shakkan Elliott-Tibbs, 22, argued in the 700 block of N. Fayette Street.

The altercation turned physical, and Adkins produced a .40 handgun and shot Tibbs at least four times, authorities said. Adkins then fled the area. Shortly thereafter, Tibbs succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital.

Tibbs, of Woodbridge, was visiting his cousin in Alexandria that night and was on his way to the Metro to meet his mother in Springfield at the time of the shooting, according to authorities.

Adkins was charged almost a year later in the shooting.

The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney will be announcing information soon about sentencing recommendations once the jury's sentence has been tendered to the Court.
