ALEXANDRIA, VA — The 2021 Alexandria St. Patrick's Day Parade is canceled in 2021.

The Ballyshaners, a group formed to promote and preserve Irish heritage, announced the parade cancellation on its website. The parade typically happens on the first Saturday of March, featuring pipe bands, Irish dance schools, community organizations and other performers. It is usually preceded by the Fun Dog Show held in coordination with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

This year would have been the 40th annual parade. In 2020, the March 7 parade was the last major event in Alexandria before COVID-19 restrictions began to be implemented.

The Ballyshaners' two major events are the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Alexandria Irish Festival. The festival, held annually over the summer, went virtual in 2020. While the event normally features food, vendors and performances, the virtual event featured video messages, demonstrations and performances as well as an online Irish marketplace.
