Body Recovered Thursday from Potomac River: Police

The Alexandria Fire Department reports a body has been recovered from the Potomac River Thursday afternoon.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- A body of a man has been recovered Thursday afternoon in the Potomac River off the Alexandria shoreline, according to a spokeswoman for the Alexandria Police Department.

The fire department responded for a water rescue at 1:35 p.m. Thursday, the police department said. The Alexandria Fire Department, DC Fire and EMS and the Metropolitan Police Department attempted to rescue the man, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The victim, an adult male, was found deceased in the water. The investigation has been turned over to the Alexandria Police Department and an investigation of his death is ongoing. This is not considered a suspicious death, police said.

Alexandria Police Detectives have determined that the victim did not fall from a boat, as was earlier reported by an observer to the fire department, but was actually last seen standing near the water, police said in an update.

No word on why the man was in the water or his identity.

A gale warning is in effect on the river through Thursday at 6 p.m. and a Small Craft Advisory through Friday at 6 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. A gale warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or occurring; a small craft advisory means winds of 18 to 33 knots are imminent or occurring.

Police have been searching the Potomac River in the Great Falls area this week for a Northern Virginia woman who was first reported missing Monday night.
