Potter, Kayaker, Mother: Sara Baker Brings Her Wares to Art on the Avenue

Sara Baker makes hand-thrown and altered functional pots in a variety of food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher-safe glazes, and low-relief vessels and tiles inspired by patterns visible in nature.

"Each of my pieces illustrates the processes behind its creation as well as the hand of its creator," explains Baker, whose own varied experiences influence her craft.

When Baker is not making pottery -- and she says, "I love sitting down to throw at the wheel and getting lost in the process." -- she's immersed in water. The past years have seen Baker become an avid kayaker and now even a kayak instructor for others.

The influence of waves and water are evident in her work; many pieces of her pottery, such as the Wave Platter and Wave Bowl, reflect swirls of sea-green and dark blue.

Baker is also a mother of two, an avid reader and book club devotee, and an accomplished chef.  Perhaps for this reason, she thinks often about how her creations will be used.

"Seeing my kiln full of strong useful pots is still satisfying after all these years," says Baker. "I like to think about where these pots end up—on peoples' tables and in peoples' hands, being used and appreciated."
