Change of Ownership Coming to King Street Restaurant Location

Changes coming under new ownership of King Street eatery location: New owners to stay open later, serve breakfast.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Nickell's & Scheffler, which advertises itself as a place where you can purchase "fine food to eat in or take out," is changing hands after being in business for the past 15 years in the heart of Old Town, according to paperwork filed with the City on Tuesday.

Located at 1028 King St., at the corner of King and S. Henry streets (see map below), the cozy eatery has served up a variety of comfort food from crab cakes to espresso brownies as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options. Although the restaurant opens early it does not currently serve breakfast.

That will change with the new ownership; new owner Lori Leetz and co-owner Ann Feeley say in their application that there are plans afoot to serve breakfast and to also stay open later, until 10 p.m. No word yet on when the changeover will take place or the name of the new enterprise, although "Lori's Place LLC" is listed on the application. Expect some sprucing up at the location, in the way of new paint and flooring.

Through the years, Nickell's & Scheffler has earned 3.5 stars from 64 reviews on Yelp. Here's what some Yelpers have had to say:

Che of Alexandria says: "I love this place. I've honestly never had a sandwich there. I love their rotation of daily specials which include a variety of freshly made local vegetable based dishes, salads and sides. I fell in love with Nickell's & Scheffler when I was vegetarian I would make a meal out of several sides, but I still love them. If you want interesting, affordable ($10 crabcake meals!), well plated, delicious food, pop in. They often have quiches, crabcakes, salmon, chicken breasts... the menu rotates."

Jonathan of Alexandria notes: "Excellent, no-frills sandwiches made with meats roasted in-house and fresh ingredients. I've never had a bad experience the many times I've come here, although the chef can be a bit off-putting with his demeanor. The woman who usually works the counter is incredibly sweet though, so it balances out! Also, the sides are very tasty and I had a lovely fruit tart on my visit today."

Jane of Falls Church says: "If you want to go to a real mom and pop sandwich shop this is it. An older couple hustles about making your food to order from a list of specials. Nice corner location with plentiful seating Ina back room with a large window for people watching. No need to feel rushed or cramped. I ordered a grilled vegetable panini with Brie."
