Christ Church Announces Covid-19 Memorial

Honoring Alexandrians

Alexandria, VA, March 4, 2021— One year ago, the first death from Covid-19 was registered in Alexandria. Since then, more than 120 Alexandrians have died from this virus.

Beginning on March 11, a display of small, white flags in the Christ Church graveyard in Old Town will commemorate each passing. The flags are scheduled to be in place through March 24.

“The Christ Church graveyard has always been a public place for our city, and people have walked through for generations, to enjoy a quiet moment, to see the historic markers, or just to cut through on a walk through Old Town,” said the Rev. Dr. Noelle York-Simmons. “Now we hope they will pause to remember those in our city whom we love and see no longer. We’ve lost brothers, sisters, parents, co-workers, and friends. The toll of this virus on our city is great and we hope to provide a place to mourn.”

“In the words of our Episcopal liturgy, these loved ones rest in that place ‘where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.’”

All are welcome to come, to pray, to remember.
