ALEXANDRIA, VA — At a City Council meeting Tuesday night, Mayor Justin Wilson proclaimed March 22 to be known as Charlie Hill Day, to mark the 30th anniversary of the line-of-duty death of the Alexandria police officer.

Cpl. Hill, a member of the Police Department's Special Operations Team, was shot to death in a hostage confrontation on March 22, 1989, according to the Alexandria Police Foundation. He was 40 years old with a wife, Virginia and two children, Charles and Robert, who serves as an officer in the Alexandria Police Department.

The department's shooting range and a park in Del Ray were later named in his honor. Friends and family of Officer Hill gather in the park every year to honor him.
