DC, Virginia's Most Popular Baby Names In 2016 Are ...

Like parents across the country, Virginians loved Noah as a baby boy name. They liked Emma for girls, but not as much as they loved Ava.

Virginians helped Noah and, to a lesser extent, Emma rise to the top in an accounting of the top baby names in the United States. There were 517 baby boys named Noah born in Virginia in 2016, and 450 baby girls whose parents named them Emma.

So, what was the top baby girl name in Virginia in 2016? Olivia was the choice of 480 parents, according to list of most popular baby names by state released by the Social Security Administration Thursday.

The U.S. list of most popular baby names was released last week, with just one new entry in the top 10, Elijah. It ranked No. 7 among most popular names in Virginia, with 402 baby boys given that name in 2016; in Washington, DC, Elijah ranked No. 14 in popularity with 46 boys given the name.

The SSA began compiling the list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. The administration also notes how popular culture influences baby names. For 2016, the name Kehlani had the biggest jump in popularity and for boys, the name was Kylo.

The bump in popularity for Kehlani is likely to do with the popularity of the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Kehlani Parrish, according to the SSA. The bump for Kylo on the other hand likely has to do with the character in the 2015 movie, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
