ALEXANDRIA, VA — On Tuesday, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria marked a milestone with its first on-site surgery.

Biscuit, an 8-year-old gray and white cat, was the lucky recipient of the first surgery in AWLA's new Mobile Veterinary and Event vehicle. Biscuit and a few other cats received dental cleanings needed before they could be ready for their new homes. State-required spay and neuter surgeries were also part of the routine surgeries performed that day. These types of routine procedures are provided to all AWLA pets who need them.

"Biscuit was the first of many animals who will be helped in our mobile surgery vehicle," said Dr. Erica Caldwell, the AWLA staff veterinarian. "As more and more animals come through our doors, having the capability to perform surgery onsite means we will be able to assist the greatest number of animals and help them find families of their own."

The Mobile Veterinary and Event vehicle, nicknamed "Waggin' Wheels by AWLA, will provide mobile surgery and travel to community events. The vehicle has the capacity to transport 10 or more animals, depending on size, to community events. The vehicle will make its community debut at the "Dogs of Del Ray" themed First Thursday on May 6. But the primary focus in the first months will be surgeries at AWLA.

"We’re looking forward to reconnecting with more of our community, and in locations where it's convenient for them to find us,” said AWLA Executive Director Stella Hanly in a statement. "We can’t wait to host adoption events on the waterfront, swing by schools to help students learn more about animal welfare and just generally be where people want to meet us."

Caldwell was instrumental in helping AWLA purchase and outfit the vehicle. She also performed the first surgeries.

"We’ve been fortunate to work with several veterinary providers who’ve donated their time and expertise to ensure our adoptable animals receive the care they need, but this mobile surgery will mean we can take on the routine surgeries, so our partners can focus on the animals needing specialized care," said Caldwell.

AWLA's veterinary providers — Caring Hands Animal Hospital, Hayfield Animal Hospital, Loving Touch Animal Hospital and VCA Animal Hospitals — provide additional surgical care to the shelter's adoptable animals.
