ALEXANDRIA, VA—Alexandria and other areas of the region were pounded with heavy rain, resulting in flooding and dangerous road conditions Monday morning. Heavy rain in a short amount of time prompted a flash flood warning for Alexandria and surrounding areas. A flash flood warning is in effect until 1:45 p.m. in Alexandria.

Flooding is happening around streams, particularly in the Cameron Run area, according to the National Weather Service. Areas susceptible to flooding include small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, other drainage areas and low-lying spots. Residents living near creeks and streams should take immediate steps to protect themselves and their property.

Officials urged residents to avoid driving until conditions improve. According to the IAFF Local 2141 union, firefighters were responding to numerous water rescues. Some of these locations included East Glebe Road near Wilson Avenue, the 400 Block of Taylor Run Parkway, the 100 Block of Dangerfield Road near the King Street Metro, and Commonwealth Avenue and Sunset Drive.
