Free Preschool Space For 45 Kids Launched In Alexandria
Alexandria's Child & Family Network Centers is opening new preschool classroom space at an apartment complex.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — A new classroom space launched by Child & Family Network Centers will offer free preschool education to 45 children in Alexandria. The classrooms are in a West End apartment complex at 101 South Whiting Street.
The preschool classroom space became possible through public funding, private contributions, and pro bono support from the community. City Council approved $41,000 for the renovation of the space, while private donations came from Marietta McNeil Morgan and Samuel Tate Morgan Jr. Trust, Van Metre Foundation and an anonymous donor.
Architect Mike Detomo of Cole and Denny Architects donated his services to design the space, while Biscayne Contractors completed the renovation to get the project done on time and within budget.

Child & Family Network Centers was started in 1984 by Alexandria mothers who wanted their children to be better prepared for elementary school. The effort spearheaded a network of preschools for low-income children. The schools are located in apartment complexes and recreation centers near where the families live. Aside from preschool, Child & Family Network Centers provide free health services, in-home visits and counseling services.
"Today, we are proud to continue their vision by opening these classrooms in the neighborhood where they are needed the most," said Lisa Ferrari Carter, Child & Family Network Centers' executive director. "All of Alexandria’s children deserve access to high-quality pre-K, and adding these classrooms to the other 6 we operate ensures children in our community are ready to learn and succeed."
