Giant To Open New Alexandria Store, Close West End Store

The DMV's largest grocery chain will open a new store on Little River Turnpike, replacing a smaller store on Edsall Road at Van Dorn Street.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Grocery shoppers, take heed: Giant Food is opening a new store next month in Alexandria, replacing an older store in the West End, the company announced Tuesday. The company said the new store will bring many new jobs to the area.

The new Giant will open on Nov. 16 at 6200 Little River Turnpike in the Plaza at Landmark shopping center, a block west of Interstate 395 (see map below).

The day before, the Giant in the Van Dorn Station shopping center, at 5730 Edsall Road, will close its doors for the last time, the company said. The shopping center is at the corner of Edsall Road and Van Dorn Street in the city's West End.

Giant Foods, the largest grocery store chain in the Washington, D.C., region, also plans to close a store next month in Herndon, in northern Fairfax County, and open a new location nearby.

The opening of the two new Giants will bring more than 250 new jobs to Northern Virginia, the company said in a press release.

Both stores will have expanded natural and organic departments, hot food bars, and larger selections of produce, ethnic food, and beer and wine, the company said. The new Alexandria store also will have a Starbucks Café, and both stores will have free WiFi and a PNC Bank inside.
