Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
The Patterson Group: Phyllis’s family was heavily involved in the real estate world in her hometown in South Carolina. Growing up around real estate inspired Phyllis to enter the industry, though she worked for a senator for a few years before becoming a realtor. Britt's career path followed a similar trajectory: she joined her mother and formed The Patterson Group after a few years of working in the political sphere.

Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger in five words, what would those words be?
The Patterson Group: Living, loving and selling Alexandria.
Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced in your job?
The Patterson Group: Buying or selling a home can be a very emotional process. Because real estate transactions often occur alongside some of life’s biggest changes—births, deaths, marriage, divorce, expanding, downsizing, etc.—there are many ups and downs. We are there for our clients through it all.
Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
The Patterson Group: Helping someone find the home of their dreams and settle into their neighborhood is an indescribable feeling! That joy, along with our passion for Alexandria, is what keeps us going through all the highs and lows.

Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?
The Patterson Group: We offer unique insight gained from our many years in real estate and our many years here in Alexandria. We have personal knowledge of Alexandria’s neighborhoods, from community pools to homeowners’ associations, and can tell you what a commute might be like and what restaurants are worth your while. Professionally, we have longstanding relationships with numerous local contractors and advanced knowledge of what’s coming in the area. Put simply, we know the market. We have the benefit of team members’ combined expertise and collective attention to market trends.
Beyond that, we like to think we offer superior professionalism, integrity and loyalty and make the process of buying or selling a home worry-free and fun.
Patch: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when it comes to success?
The Patterson Group: There are two major pieces of advice we’ve received that shape how we do business every day. The first is to define success for yourself and let that fuel you and keep you humble. The second is to never, ever, for any reason, lie. It sounds simple, but can be hard to put into practice when you have to break bad news to clients or accept responsibility for something that did not go as planned. The truth may be hard at first, but you will never regret telling the truth. We go to great lengths to be honest with all parties every step of the way, no matter what.
Patch: Are there any new projects or endeavors you’re working on that you’re extra excited about?
The Patterson Group: Brittany has found a niche in new and remodeled construction and has relationships with several local builders. She enjoys matching clients with new or renovated homes before they go on the market, early enough in the process that buyers can provide input and make selections on finishes and fixtures. Alexandria has several upcoming projects that will add much-needed and highly sought-after inventory in the area.
Patch: Do you have any events coming up in your community?
The Patterson Group: We have been looking forward to the Wine on the Water event (Saturday, June 9) benefiting Alexandria’s Seaport Foundation for a long time and are so excited that the weekend is finally here! This event raises crucial funds for a local charity that is near and dear to our hearts, and we can’t wait to see the outcome of all the hard work volunteers have put in throughout the past year to make this a fun and impactful weekend. Mount Vernon Estate always hosts great events during the summer, too, including the Independence Fireworks on June 29th and 30th, the Neighborhood Friends Family Night Picnic on August 19th, and the second annual Mount Vernon Underground Masquerade in September.
