A grand jury on Monday indicted Dallas Smith, 31, on murder and burglary charges in the July 23 homicide, say Alexandria police.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A homeless man is facing trial on charges that he murdered an elderly Alexandria man during a burglary in his home several weeks ago. On Monday, a grand jury in the Alexandria Circuit Court indicted Dallas Smith, 31, of no fixed address, on five felony charges related to the July 23 death of Jerry Scott, 82, the Alexandria Police Department announced.
The police allege that the homicide occurred at Scott’s home on East Reed Avenue, off Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1) near the Potomac Yard shopping center.
On the morning of July 23, police and paramedics were dispatched to Scott's home, where they found him with trauma to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the police said.
