Over 2 Million Virginians Have First COVID-19 Vaccine Dose
Close to a quarter of the state's population has one vaccine dose, according to state health department data.
VIRGINIA — Virginia surpassed 2 million residents with at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, representing 23.9 percent of the population.
According to Virginia Department of Health data, 3,075,086 total doses have been administered, with 2,039,437 people receiving at least their first dose. The total of fully vaccinated people stands at 1,114,156, or about 13.1 percent of the population.
Vaccination rates per 100,000 people go up by age group. The highest rate of fully vaccinated people is in the 80 and up age group with 41,520 per 100,000 people, followed by the 70s group with 25,526 per 100,000.

On average, 46,772 doses are being given each day in the state. Local health departments lead the state with 975,720 total doses given, followed by hospitals with 749,268 total doses. Pharmacies have administered a total of 598,685 vaccines. Medical practices are next with 449,303 doses administered followed by community health providers at 302,110.
Some parts of Virginia have moved into phase 1c of vaccinations, which involves some essential worker groups. Most of the state, including Northern Virginia localities, remain in phase 1b. Phase 1b includes people 65 and older, people 16 to 64 with an underlying condition, certain essential workers, and people living in homeless shelters, correctional facilities and migrant labor camps. VDH expects all of Virginia can be in phase 2 (all Virginians 16 and up) by May 1.

All Virginians, except those in the Fairfax Health District, can preregister for the vaccine at vaccinate.virginia.gov. Fairfax County and cities of Falls Church and Fairfax residents eligible in the current phases 1a or 1b should continue to register through the local health department.
COVID-19 data
On Sunday, 1,159 additional COVID-19 cases were reported by VDH, and the seven-day average of daily cases is 1,453. Northern Virginia accounted for 312 new cases and has a seven-day average of 422 daily cases.
An additional 13 COVID-19 deaths were reported, bringing the death total to 10,117. The new deaths followed a net decrease of 90 deaths reported Friday by the VDH. The health department attributed the lowering of the number of deaths to a review it conducted of mortality rates attributed to COVID-19.
Virginia's COVID-19 hospitalizations stand at 993 statewide after Virginia reached 977 Saturday, the lowest level since Oct. 20. COVID-19 patients account for about 7.7 percent of the 12,881 hospital beds occupied in Virginia.
Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 29 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 75 percent, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
Virginia's seven-day average of positive PCR tests is 5.4 percent as of March 17. The current positive rate is similar to the level last seen in late October before the winter surge in cases. On average, 19,513 daily PCR testing encounters were reported statewide on March 17, down from a peak of 35,034 on Jan. 14.

- Falls Church: 373 cases, 20 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of two cases
- Loudoun County: 24,552 cases, 924 hospitalizations, 263 deaths; increase of 61 cases and two hospitalizations
- Manassas: 4,119 cases, 166 hospitalizations, 45 deaths; increase of five cases
- Manassas Park: 1,150 cases, 67 hospitalizations, 12 deaths; increase of one case
