ALEXANDRIA, VA —Activists have canceled a planned protest at a Holiday Inn hotel in Alexandria on Monday for safety reasons.

The "No Room for Fascists" protest was to take place at 3 p.m. at the Holiday Inn at 2460 Eisenhower Ave., where activists claim members of the Proud Boys, a right-wing group supporting Trump, and other fascist groups will be staying. Jonathan Krall, a spokesperson for Grassroots Alexandria, said activists identified hotels that reportedly have blocks for these various groups. Activists have already made phone calls to the Holiday Inn Alexandria and other hotels urging them to cancel reservations for the groups attending the Trump rally.

Krall said pressure from phone calls prompted the Hotel Harrington to close Jan. 4-6 amid the rally. Hotel Harrington has recently been frequented by the Proud Boys, including during the December protest that resulted in physical confrontations with counterprotesters, according to the Washington Post. Hotel Harrington will close to all but long-term residents.

"Washington, D.C., has been our home for 106 years and we join with all of our guests, visitors, staff and neighbors in our concern and desire for everyone's health and safety," the hotel stated on its website. "We greatly appreciate the trust our guests have placed in Hotel Harrington over the years and we wish to continue to earn that trust."

A protest flyer says the Holiday Inn Alexandria "is hosting violent white supremacists and neo-Nazis on the week of Jan. 6." During Monday's protest outside the Alexandria hotel, activists will call on Holiday Inn and other public corporations to not support white nationalists. Masks and social distancing are encouraged at the protest.

Grassroots Alexandria has been involved in other protests in Alexandria. When white nationalist Richard Spencer lived in Alexandria, the group protested twice a month for over a year. More recently, Grassroots Alexandria has held protests outside acting U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf's home in response to detention center practices.
