1 Suspect Dead After Old Town North Shootings, Another In Custody

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A suspect died Monday morning after two shootings in Old Town North, according to Alexandria Police. Another suspect turned himself in on Monday.

The shootings happened after an attempted robbery around 5:01 a.m. at a hotel in the 600 block of First Street. As police were responding, two individuals fled on foot. No one was injured inside the hotel.

Around 5:50 a.m., officers located two suspects and started a foot pursuit. At 2nd and Royal Streets, one of the suspects exchanged gunfire with an officer. The officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and has been released from the hospital.

Police and K9 teams located one of the suspects around 6:24 a.m. near the intersection of Montgomery and Fairfax Streets. After the suspect and officers exchanged fire, the suspect died on the scene. No officers were injured in this second exchange of gunfire.

The suspect, who was only identified as a man, was taken to the medical examiner for an examination and autopsy. A stolen gun was recovered from the suspect. Next of kin notification is pending.

At the request of Alexandria's police chief, Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting incidents. State Police identified Mitchell David Thompson, 26, of Alexandria, as one of the suspects. After turning himself in, he was charged with felony count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Additional charges are pending.

During the Monday morning foot pursuit, shelter-in-place guidance was issued to residents from Bashford Lane to Montgomery Street and Washington Street/George Washington Memorial Parkway to the Potomac River. After the shelter-in-place guidance was lifted, officers and K9s were walking around the Old Town North area to search for additional evidence.

The investigation by state police is ongoing.
