City crews are working to clear snow from the roads. Here's the deadline for clearing sidewalks and other information.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The snow has stopped after the weekend's winter storm, but efforts continued to clear snow from roads and walkways around Alexandria Monday, Jan. 14. The storm was upgraded to a Level 2 storm, which means roads are hazardous and drivers only travel for emergencies.

City crews have cleared snow from all primary, secondary and intermediate routes, as well as 75 percent of residential streets, according to the city's 9 p.m. Monday update. Snow is first removed from snow emergency routes, followed by secondary routes, intermediate routes and residential streets.

City crews also clear public walkways in the following order:

  • First priority: School walking areas, accessible curb ramps and sidewalks near key transit stops such as Metro stations, and retail zones.
  • Second priority: Walks expanding out from schools, parks, and municipal locations.
  • Third priority: Trails, pathways internal to parks, and bike paths. (The Mount Vernon Trail is maintained by the National Park Service and is not plowed during snow events).

Residents can check the status of snow removal at apps.alexandriava.gov/SnowReport.

Property owners, occupants, community associations and businesses are responsible for clearing their own sidewalks, driveways, and entrances. Since the storm was determined to be Level 2, residents have 48 hours from the end of snowfall to clear the snow. The deadline for this storm is Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 11:30 p.m. The city will accept complaints about snow removal at that time, and penalties can include a $50 fine and the cost for the city to clear the sidewalk.
