The Most Popular Flowers to Give on Mother’s Day

Experts say you should order your Mother's Day flowers sooner than later.

Mother’s Day is May 12 and besides the brunch reservations and jewelry, people will be scrambling to buy their No. 1 lady flowers.

Jenny Scala, spokeswoman for the Old Town Alexandria-based Society of American Florists said Mother’s Day flower and plant sales are second to Christmas and just above Valentine’s Day, which is third on the list of busiest days for florists.

“Mother’s Day counts for a fourth of all floral sales for holidays,” Scala said.

Orchids, lillies, tulips, roses, irises and calla lillies are amongst the most popular flower choices for Mother’s Day, according to ProFlowers.com. According to the website, hydrangea, azaleas, chrysanthemums and blooming kalanchoe plants re amongst the best selling plants for Mother’s Day. Scala said the floral industry is global and there won’t be a shortage of flowers to go around.

Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, according to History.com.

According to AboutFlowers.com, 87 percent of people shopping for Mother’s Day will buy flowers or plants. Of those shoppers, 70 percent will be shopping for their own mother, 24 percent will be shopping for their mother-in-law and 23 percent will be shopping for their wives.
