What's Open, Closed In Alexandria For New Year's Day 2020

ALEXANDRIA, VA — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of city government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed Jan. 1.

State offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk's Office, Alexandria Circuit Court and Alexandria General District Court, will be closed on Dec. 31, and Jan. 1.The Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Jan. 1. The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed on Jan. 1.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed Dec. 23-Jan. 3.

Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, with animal viewing beginning at noon. The Animal Shelter will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1. For an animal emergency, call 703-746-4444.

DASH Bus and King Street Trolley: On Dec. 31, DASH will operate regular weekday service on all of its routes, including the King Street Trolley. As part of the First Night Alexandria New Year's Eve festivities, DASH will also provide limited trolley service between the Durant Center and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial from approximately 5:30 to 11 p.m. On Jan. 1, regular DASH bus service will not operate; however, the free King Street Trolley will run on its regular schedule, every 10-15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., between the King St.-Old Town Metro Station and waterfront.

Health department: The Alexandria Health Department main office (4480 King St.), Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.), and Teen Wellness Center (3330 King St.) will be open on Dec. 31, and closed on Jan. 1.

Historic sites and museums: On Dec. 31, the Alexandria Black History Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Alexandria's History Museum at the Lyceum and Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and the Alexandria Archaeology Museum will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. All City museums will be closed on Jan. 1. Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency mental health services or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1-888-832-3858; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: The City's Impound Facility (5249 Eisenhower Ave.) will be closed on Jan. 1, and fees will not accrue on this day.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, and will remain closed on Jan. 1. The Alexandria Law Library will be closed both days. Talking Book Service at Beatley Central Library will be closed from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1.

Metrorail: On Dec. 31, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. with special late night service until 2 a.m. New Year's Day. On Jan. 1, Metrorail will operate 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities New Year's Day, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. See bus timetables.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Jan. 1. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on Jan. 1.

Post offices: Closed Jan. 1. No mail will be delivered.

Recreation and art centers: All City of Alexandria recreation and art centers, including the Torpedo Factory Art Center, will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Trash and recycling: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on Dec. 31, but not on Jan. 1. Collection services normally scheduled for Jan. 1-3 will be delayed by one day. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collections Drop-off Center (3224 Colvin St.) will be open on Dec. 30.
